Transforming Women’s Healthcare

The Women’s Imaging Lab is a research team that focuses on women’s healthcare through imaging and collaborations. The team is led by Dr. Rebecca Rakow-Penner, MD, PhD who is an expert radiologist in women’s health and an imaging physicist.

Our Mission

We are a collaborative team of clinicians and scientists committed to transforming women’s healthcare across the lifespan. By developing and translating cutting-edge imaging approaches, we seek to redefine how disease is detected, characterized, and treated—delivering more precise, earlier, and more equitable care for women at every stage of life.

Our Why

As former U.S. Maryland Senator Barabara Mikulski, 1987 – 2017, noted:

“For far too long, women’s health was ignored… Remember the famous study, take an aspirin a day to keep the heart attack away? That study was done on 10,000 men. Not one woman was included. In a study of the aging process, they told me women weren’t included because there wasn’t a lady’s room available for study participants. Yet the results of these studies were being applied to men and women.”

For Generations,

Women have been underrepresented in medical research, resulting in gaps in knowledge, delayed diagnoses, and healthcare approaches that do not fully reflect women’s unique biology and health needs.

At the Women’s Imaging Lab we believe women deserve evidence-based care informed by research that reflects their experience and needs. By advancing innovation, discovery, and investing in women’s health research, we can help close these gaps and improve health outcomes for women today and for future generations.
